Two New York Police Department officers have been shot in a public housing complex.
The officers were on patrol in a New York housing project and had stopped to question a group of people before getting into an exchange of gunfire.
A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press the officers were on patrol in the Bronx on Thursday night when they encountered a group of people in a hallway. The official says someone in the group pulled out a gun and exchanged fire with the officers.
The official isn’t authorized to speak publicly about the developing investigation and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.
A spokeswoman for the mayor says one of the officers was shot in the face and the other was shot in an arm.
The officers are awake and alert at a hospital. Several people are being questioned.
According to CBS News, one suspect is dead, a second is in custody, but a massive manhunt is underway to find the third suspect.
