Police K-9 finds missing woman in frigid pond

TOLLAND, Conn. (WTNH) — A missing woman is now recovering in the hospital after a police K-9 dog led state troopers to rescue her from a frigid pond in Tolland.

Authorities say the 55-year-old woman had not been seen since walking out of her Eaton Road home, around 8 pm on Wednesday. State police began looking for her about an hour later, but after an extensive search, she could still not be found.

State police issued a statewide Silver Alert for the missing woman and notified nearby police departments and hospitals. Emergency officials in Tolland called homes within a 5 mile radius of Eaton Road to check if anyone had seen her or knew where she was, according to police.

Several hours later, Trooper Cristy located foot prints in the snow on the side of Stafford Road. The officer got out of his cruiser, and noticed that a trail a footprints led straight into the woods. The trooper and his K-9 partner “Axel” headed into the woods to look for the missing woman, police said.

At around 3 a.m. on Thursday, K-9 “Axel” found the missing woman in a frigid pond approximately 80 yards into the woods. Troopers were able to rescue her from the pond and get her into an ambulance waiting back on the road.

The woman was transported to Johnson Memorial Hospital to be evaluated.
