Buncombe Co. suspect caught, held by witnesses

LEICESTER – A Buncombe County man is under arrest after sheriff’s deputies say he tried to hold up a gas station and took a wallet from a woman who was pumping gas.

Travis Lee Coffey of Leicester faces three counts of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and common law robbery. Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies say Coffey went to an Ingles gas station on New Leicester Highway around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

He tried to hold up the clerk inside the station with a knife, but the employee was protected by a glass partition. Deputies say the suspect left the store and took a wallet from a woman who was pumping gas.

Three people were able to catch Coffey and hold him until deputies got to the scene. He’s being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $80,000 bond.
