Battling cancer, not dust bunnies: Cleaning for a Reason

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — People battling cancer are often too tired from treatments to deal with daily tasks, like cleaning the house. Fortunately, a local organization has stepped in to help, and one woman suffering from breast cancer says it’s giving her time back with her family.

“I’ll be able to come home and just relax instead of worrying about cleaning the house,” says Kim Ramsthel, who is going through treatment for stage 4 cancer. “You’re getting shots, not just a little flu shot, they are shots with quite big needles and I have to get three of them each month.”

The charity Cleaning for a Reason referred Ramsthel to Maid Brigade, which cleans Ramsthel’s Milwaukie home. At any given time, Maid Brigade is cleaning the house of 3 to 4 cancer patients in the Gresham-Milwaukie area, free of charge.

“It’s kind of disheartening for people who can normally do something and all of the sudden, they find they’re physically unable to do that. Very emotional time so if we can pick up that slack, help them feel better, if we can help we’ll be able to do that,” says Greg Nicklas, the General Manager of Maid Brigade in Gresham.

For Ramsthel, it means more time with her husband and teenage daughter, and less time dealing with the stress of a messy house.

“We’re able to spend family time together, even playing games. I don’t have to worry about dusting or cleaning floors because it’s already been done.”
