Furman’s Croone, Wofford’s Magee Earn SoCon Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced the 2016 men’s basketball postseason awards today (March 3). Selections include the coaches all-conference teams and specialty awards in addition to the Southern Conference Sports Media Association all-conference teams and awards.

 

The 2016 Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship presented by General Shale begins Friday at 5 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. The championship game is scheduled for Monday at 9 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.

Notes:

– Matt McCall becomes the second UTC coach to earn the Anton Foy Coach of the Year Award in the past three seasons as Will Wade earned the nod in 2014.  Wade was also in his first season at the helm in Chattanooga in 2014.

 

– Stephen Croone is the first Furman player to earn the Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year Awards since Chuck Vincent in 1998.

 

– Fletcher Magee is the third Wofford Terrier to be named Freshman of the Year (Ian Chadwick – 1998; Karl Cochran – 2012)

 

– Justin Tuoyo is the first player to be named Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons since the award began in 2009.

 

– A Chattanooga Moc has now won the Defensive Player of the Year award in each of the past three seasons (Z. Mason – 2014; Justin Tuoyo, 2015-16).

 

– Chattanooga placed two student-athletes on the coaches 10-man all-conference team for the third consecutive year.

 

– Eight teams were represented on the coaches all-conference team, while all ten teams placed at least one honoree on the three media teams.

 

– Samford placed at least one player on the All-Freshman team for the fifth straight season, while The Citadel was represented on the All-Freshman team for the fourth straight year.
