COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Joseph Battle scored 32 points, three of them on free throws in the final 1:09, lifting Abbeville to a 58-55 win over Timberland and its first 2A state championship.
Timberland took its final lead Saturday when a jumper by Waun’Ye Cox with 1:27 made it 55-54.
But Abbeville (20-4) responded, taking the lead for good when Battle made the first two of the three free throws.
Timberland (23-6) was down 3 and had a chance to force overtime but a 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell short.
Battle was 10-of-17 from the field and added 7 rebounds. Dailyn McKinney finished with 26 points to lead Timberland.
Neither team led by more than six points during a game which featured 15 lead changes and nine ties.
