COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH)–It happened in a blink of an eye–an unidentified man snatched a box full of money and made out with nearly $600 in Girl Scout Cookie sales money from Troop 2439.
Kelli Loeffler, a parent volunteer, was stunned.
“I was just actually locking the cashbox. My left hand was on the lid, my right hand the keys were in and I was just getting ready to kick it,” she said. The girls had been selling at the Walmart in Canal Winchester.
Loeffler took off after the man.
“Honestly I was just focused on getting the girls’ money back,” she said. “I wasn’t thinking anything else, but ‘hey, that’s not right.’”
Her daughter Keegan was standing nearby.
“I’ve never seen her run that fast in my life,” Keegan said.
Loeffler ran for help, finding Debbie Dunlap and her daughter Lorelai who had been selling cookies at the other door.
“The girls were yelling (that) he had stolen our money box. So I asked someone to call the police,” Dunlap said.
“There are a lot of people who have money that don’t think that was much money but we worked for hours in the cold,” Lorelai added.
The girls plan to use their cookie profits for a trip to Tennessee–a journey meant to bring the group closer after the sudden death of two parents and a teacher in 2014.
“It was supposed to be a real pick me up for them,” Debbie Dunlap said. “They’re a close troop. They’ve all handled this adversity quite well.”
News of the cookie caper traveled quickly. By Monday morning, more than $2,000 had been donated to Troop 2439.
The money will also help these Girl Scouts finish their Bronze Award..a community service project for the YWCA family shelter.
These Girl Scouts and their parent leaders thank the community for their support.
“From one heinous act, just the goodwill of others has been amazing,” Loeffler said.
