The family of a man who died while in custody says investigators are not keeping them in the loop about developments in the case.
Demetric Cowan, 38, died inside the Greenwood County Detention center March 13 hours after he was arrested on charges of marijuana and ecstasy possession and resisting arrest. A local activist and spokesman for Cowan’s family says he was beaten by police, but an autopsy shows no signs of physical trauma.
The family says it didn’t know the autopsy was completed until they saw news reports.
“As this investigation goes on, the family wants to be included in the investigation,” said Bruce Wilson, a local activist and spokesman for Cowan’s family. “They want it to be impartial, they want it to be transparent.”
Neither the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office or Greenwood Police returned calls seeking comment. A toxicology report is expected to be completed in a few days.
