ATV rider killed in crash with NC deputy

SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) – An ATV rider was killed in a head-on crash with a Lee County sheriff’s deputy early Friday morning.

It happened around 1 a.m. on East Forest Oak Drive near Ward Memorial Baptist Church in Sanford.

Shelton McLean, 31, of Sanford, died when his ATV collided with Lee County sheriff’s Deputy Manuel Torres’ patrol car.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Torres was traveling east on East Forest Oaks Road near Lower Moncure Road when he met McLean’s ATV, which was traveling west and straddling the centerline of the roadway.

As the two vehicles met each other, they collided. After impact, the deputy’s vehicle traveled onto the right shoulder and struck a ditch.

The ATV traveled onto the right shoulder. McLean was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Torres was taken to hospital where he was treated and released.

The investigation is ongoing but charges are not expected.

A preliminary investigation indicates McLean traveled into the path of the deputy’s vehicle.
