Murder at Marion Main St. apartment, suspect charged say police

Marion Police say they have charged 71-year-old Howard Ferguson for the murder of 62-year-old Phillip Ray.

They say they responded to a report of a shooting on March 28 at a small set of apartments on the 300 block of South Main St.

When they got there they found Ray, who lived in apartment 3, outside lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.

They say they also found Ferguson, who lives in apartment 4.

Ferguson told officers he had shot Ray and then called the police, according to the report.

They say the reason for the shooting is still under investigation and Ferguson was taken in to custody without incident.

Ray was airlifted to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville where he died due to the injuries he sustained in the shooting.

Officers with the Marion Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigations are working the crime scene at this time.
