A family escaped a house fire early Friday morning near Greer.
Dispatch received at call at 4:26 AM for a fire at a home on El Craigo Drive near Berry Mill Road in Greenville County. Lake Cunningham fire is the lead agency.
Laura Whistler, the daughter of the homeowner, says that her mother lives in the home along with her grandson. He was awake and heard a popping noise. Once he went outside, he saw flames. Whistler says he helped get his grandmother out of the house, then went back inside to retrieve his phone. He had to escape through a window. Two cats and a bird were trapped in the home. The fire department says the home is a total loss.
Heavy smoke poured from the home for more than an hour. Firefighters had issues with strong wind making the fire harder to extinguish. The fire department is still trying to figure out the cause. Red Cross was requested to help the family.
