Upstate Senator Lee Bright has introduced a bill similar to North Carolina’s HB2 that would require establishments to designate bathrooms based on a person’s biological sex.
The bill was introduced to the Senate on Wednesday by Bright.
After North Carolina’s law was passed, Paypal announced it was canceling its expansion in Charlotte, costing the state over 400 new jobs. In addition, The American Civil Liberties Union, as well as other gay-rights advocates, filed a federal lawsuit challenging HB2.
“Well, a lot of these big businesses have gotten on the wrong side of the culture war, and I think there’s going to be some pushback and I think they’re going to see this over time. I noticed PayPal got heavily involved in it. But we’ve got to do what’s right for our citizens and I think public safety is definitely in the purview of government,” said Bright.
