POLK COUNTY, NC – A chase began in Henderson County after troopers received reports that a possible impaired driver was traveling on I-26 East towards Polk County.
NC Highway Patrol say when they pulled over the vehicle the driver sped off, starting a multi-jurisdiction chase.
Troopers say the pursuit ended on I-26 before the North and South Carolina State Line when Polk County Sheriff’s deputies deployed stop sticks.
The driver, Stephen Johnson Craft II, of Lexington, SC, ran away into the nearby woods and he was not found, deputies say.
Craft also ran into a nearby neighborhood where he stole a golf cart, according to deputies.
The golf cart was found later at the Hot Spot in Landrum, reports say.
Deputies say Craft then stole a car and it has not been found yet.
It is believed that Craft may be in the Canton area in Haywood County, NC. Polk County Sheriff’s Office issued warrants for him for Breaking & Entering of a Dwelling, Breaking & Entering to Motor Vehicle and two counts of Larceny after Breaking & Entering.
Landrum Police Department, NC Highway Patrol, and possibly other agencies will have other charges.
