Friday afternoon, 7News spoke with Pastor Wendell Jones who says the congregation’s faith and the Greenville community are keeping them going.
“The outpouring of support has made yesterday a little easier to bear,” Jones explained.
He says as the flames engulfed the building, there’s one image he will never forget.
“Probably the most heart-wrenching part of watching yesterday was watching the steeple go up in flames. That really, really broke my heart yesterday,” Jones said.
He was at the church’s main building nearby when he saw firefighters running around.
“I asked them what was going on and he said, smoke was coming out of the building,” he explained.
Pastor Jones says the building that burned was a former sanctuary that a previous ministry there once used.
“So many people were married here, babies were dedicated here, and so when you look at it like that, it really grabs your heart, because it really it was affecting far more than our congregation. So it was hard to watch.”
Jones said he wants to the thank the firefighters, officers, and others who responded for keeping the other buildings from damage and keeping everyone safe.
