Controlled burn spreads smoke around Upstate

Smoke from a controlled burn in Union County has spread across Laurens and Anderson Counties in the Upstate.

Viewers in Laurens County and Anderson County have sent 7News messages about smoke and haze in the air.

According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, a controlled burn in Sumter National Forest is being used to clear underbrush to lower the chances of wildfires in the area.

The controlled burn was facilitated by the US Forest Service.

Over 2,500 acres has been burned in the Union County fire.

Another smaller controlled burn of about 70 acres is happening in Newberry County.
