A Honea Path man is out of the hospital and under arrest after Anderson County Sheriff’s Office deputies say they shot at him when he tried to run them over in a truck.
Deputies were looking for Michael Eugene Smith Jr., 45, for several outstanding felony warrants. We’re told they were in the area of Perry Drive in Iva on Wednesday when a partially camouflaged truck was spotted in some woods.
When a deputy approached the truck, the engine started and Smith tried to run over the deputy according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies shot at Smith, but he was not wounded. He drove the truck until coming to a gate at the end of the road. That’s where Smith was arrested.
Smith was treated at AnMed Health for what deputies say was a minor injury he received while resisting arrest.
He is charged with burglary-second degree, grand larceny, pointing and presenting a firearm and receiving stolen goods. A charged of attempted murder involving the deputy is pending.
