Alcohol played factor in fatal fire near Williamston, coroner says

WILLIAMSTON, SC (WSPA) – One man has died after a fire near Williamston, Thursday evening.

Johnny Dale Martin, 48, died after being pulled from the smoke-filled house on Pamela Drive, according to the Anderson County Coroner.

The coroner says the man’s girlfriend stopped at the house and found it filled with smoke and tried to pull the man to safety but was unable. Another person was able to help her get the man out of the house and he was taken to AnMed Health Medical Center where he later died.

The coroner believes alcohol played a factor in why the man could not get out of the house. They did not expect any foul play, according to the Anderson County Coroner.

The victim lived with his parents and they were out-of-town the night the fire happened, the coroner says.

According to fire officials, the house suffered some fire damage and significant smoke damage. Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen but it remains under investigation.
