Another season of competition underway at Equestrian Center; new attractions open

TRYON, NC (WSPA)–The another season of international competitions is underway at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Polk County.

It’s not just about the horses.  The TIEC is holding a day of celebration Thursday with the official grand opening of a new Mexican restaurant, The Siesta Cantina at 6pm.  There is also a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting at The General Store at 9am.  They’re also welcoming the first Farmers Market.  It’s a partnership with Growing Rural Opportunities.  It opens at 9am.

Siesta Cantina is the seventh on-site restaurant at the Equestrian Center.  All events are free and anyone can attend.

A “Buck Off for Charity” will also begin at 6:00PM.  You will have a chance to ride a mechanical horse to raise money for the Great Charity Challenge of the Carolinas, to be hosted at TIEC on Friday, July 1.

This weekend, the “Saturday Night Lights” series returns.  There is a Grand Prix show jumping capping off a week of equestrian competition in the George Morris Arena.  It begins at 7pm with accompanying family activities and live performances free to the general public.  Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. while a special screening of the derby will be aired on the jumbo-tron at race post time.

Project X will play a live selection of music throughout the evening on the first “Saturday Night Lights” of the season, while a Derby Hat contest and parade will begin at 6:00 p.m., with cash prizes being awarded to the Most Unique, Most Outrageous, and Most Exquisite hats. Other family activities will include pony rides, face painting, carousel rides, and live performers.

The center also features a horse riding simulator by Racewood Limited that allows riders to experience riding a horse, without the animal.

Sensors on a horse simulator allow competitors to improve their technique with sensors on the side of the simulator that measure pressure and position on the machine.

Caroline Barbro of “Always a Good Ride” simulator training visited the center on Thursday to help set up and provide a demonstration of the Simulator.
