Greenville-The State newspaper quotes a source close to the situation saying the SEC Women’s Tournament will return to Greenville next March and the Bon Secours Wellness Arena plans a Monday morning news conference.
7 Sports first reported last week that both city and SEC officials confirmed talks have taken place. An SEC spokesman said then that they would make the announcement of the 2017 tourney location in the city of choice on May 16th, Monday.
It’s a natural destination with two-time defending champion South Carolina likely to be a contender for a third straight title and, thus, be a driving force behind ticket sales.
The league last held its tourney in Greenville in 2005.
It would be the first predetermined postseason event awarded to the Palmetto State since last summer’s lifting of the NCAA moratorium on the state following the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the statehouse grounds.
