23-year-old Matthew Hafler was arrested and charged with Burglary, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights, and Assault on an Officer. Hafler was also cited for Reckless Driving.

Hafler was captured near Massey and Mountain View Road after investigators say he fled from deputies attempting to pull him over for driving a stolen truck, a Dodge Ram.

Hafler crashed the truck into a guardrail near Highway 81 and Campbell Road in Pelzer before running away into nearby woods, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say he hit an officer while resisting arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office says Hafler broke into a storage building at a home on Fire Tower Road and took a motorcycle license plate and tried to take a bag of tools before a neighbor spotted him and he ran.

Hafler was treated at the scene for scrapes and scratches from thick brush and thorns.

At one point, Spearman Elementary School went on lockdown as a precaution.
