EASLEY, SC (WSPA) – The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is still trying to figure out why a man shot a woman who lived across the street from him. It led to a nearly four hour standoff and the man found dead inside.
It happened Wednesday on Robert P. Jeanes Road in Easley.
Pickens Co. Sheriff’s deputies say the 45-year-old woman was shot while standing on her front porch just before Noon.
When she went to grab her cell phone, she told deputies she was shot again and was able to see the shooter standing in his yard across the street.
She said he yelled at her, “If you want, I’ll shoot you again.”
She was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday.
Deputies say he later identified him as Calvin Joseph Benton, Jr.
When they arrived, deputies say Benton refused to come out of the house and said he was armed.
The standoff ended three and a half hours later after deputies used tear gas and found Benton dead inside.
They say the house was barricaded inside with plywood covering multiple areas.
The coroner is investigating the man’s death.
