AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin mom who left her two young children home alone to go to a Zumba class is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.
According to an arrest affidavit, Gisela Sanchez-Flores, 33, took an 18-month-old child to the morning Zumba class but left her two other children at home because they were still sleeping and “she didn’t want to be late to class.”
While the mom was at the class, which is less an 1 mile away from her house, police say they received a 911 call that one of the children was found by a neighbor sitting at the intersection of Stassney Lane and Village Trail. The neighbor said vehicles had to stop because they weren’t sure if the 18-month-old child was going to cross Stassney Lane. The neighbor was able to get to the child and bring him back to his home but no one was home.
While another officer was responding to the 911 call, he noticed another child in the middle of the street, approximately 100 yards away from the home. The officer said the two-and-a-half-year-old child was “crying heavily and kept talking about his mother,” continued in the affidavit.
A spokesperson for Child Protective Services says they were called to investigate. Currently, the children are back in the home and will remain with the family.
