CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (WBTW) – The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting where a suspect died after a standoff that happened outside Chesterfield Saturday afternoon.
Major Mike Nunn says the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and SLED requested their deputies to investigate the incident.
Nunn says right now their investigation shows the incident began around 9:15pm Friday with a report of a shooting on Westfield Creek Church Road outside Chesterfield.
In a release, Nunn said the suspect was barricaded in a residence there. When deputies arrived at the scene, they came under gunfire from the residence and called for backup. At that point, Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and SLED SWAT team responded to the scene.
Nunn says law enforcement attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender of the suspect for hours, but to no avail. Over the course of the standoff, deputies say the suspect fired numerous times at officers.
Nunn says shortly after noon Saturday, the suspect came out of the residence and challenged law enforcement with a firearm and officers returned fire.
In a release, Nunn says they took steps to save the suspect and a Chesterfield County EMS unit which was staged nearby transported the suspect to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officers aren’t releasing the name of the suspect until the family is notified.
