(WFLA) – Former NBA Player Etan Thomas spent 9 years playing professional basketball – most of it with the Washington Wizards.
On Friday, he took to social media to call out a woman, he says, lied about the seat next to her. It all began when, according to Thomas, he boarded a crowded train and noticed a seat open next to the woman.
The post, which went up on Friday night, has gone viral with more than 29,000 shares, 4,000 comments, and 116,000 likes.
In a “softened” voice, Thomas explains in his Facebook post that he politely asked the woman if someone was sitting in the open seat.
The unnamed woman explained someone was sitting in the seat, so he proceeded to the next available seat, according to Thomas.
“Now, less than 2 mins later a man (who happens to be white) asks if he can sit there and she says why sure let me move my stuff,” Thomas posts in his status update about the situation.
Thomas, who says he “had to say something” to the woman about it, approaches her, “ummmmm did you just not want ME to sit next to you ? Were you scared ? Not comfortable with a Black Man sitting next to you ?
The retired NBA player said in his social media post the woman turned and said, “don’t pull the race card stuff with me, I dated a Black guy in college.”
The gentlemen sitting next to the woman reportedly offers to get up, but Thomas says “no need” and proceeds to take a picture of the woman while the gentlemen appears visibly uncomfortable. He tells the woman, “I’mma just take this pic and make a Facebook post about it,” Thomas’ post said.
The woman asks him if he just took a picture of her and, according to Thomas, says she plans to tell the conductor that he’s taking pictures of her illegally and without her consent.
Thomas explains what happens next….
“So the conductor came up and said hey Etan Thomas love what you’re doing in the community loved you with the Wizards big Cuse fan man the Knicks sure could use you …. And I said was there something you wanted to tell my man ? And she rolled her eyes,” the Facebook status said.
The name and identity of the woman Thomas reportedly had the verbal scuffle with are not known, and, so far, has not made any public statements regarding the situation.
