ANDERSON CO., SC (WSPA) – Anderson District 5 will keep their school resource officers and will not add security officers.
The school district was exploring the option of changing out its school resource officers for security office, which could save $412,000 each year.
Right now, District 5 has 9 Anderson County Deputies, 5 Anderson city police officers, and 7 private security officers.
The average cost of a deputy is around $67,000, which includes their salary, benefits, cost of patrol car, and maintenance of the car.
The district only pays around $27,000 for security guards which include salary and benefits. Their contracts are only for 9 months, where the SRO’s are hired on a 12-month contract.
The district has presented several options to law enforcement for their annual budget.
The school district is converting all of the officer’s contracts to 9 months instead of 12, and reducing other costs, which would save the district $318,000.
