June 2016 Caring for the Carolinas Award Winner

JACK ROPER
Hi Jack Roper here, we’re at Hatcher Gardens, a beautiful place where you can come and visit here in Spartanburg County. There’s a gentleman that works here and all over Spartanburg County with Volunteers they’re called the Trees Coalition. The gentleman in charge Newt Hardie and he’s winning our Caring for the Carolinas award for the month of June.

ROBIN BOLLMER – HATCHER GARDENS
The ivy that we have here, the privet, all kinds of invasive plants that we need to have cleaned out in order to keep the garden beautiful. They’ve been volunteering for years here and we so appreciate it.

BENNY CARTER – VOLUNTEER
He’s a good guy, he’s a pillar. You know, he helped a lot of us out as far as dealing with and learning how to get rid of invasive species. I’ve seen hundreds of people since I’ve been out here with Mr. Hardie, that’s volunteered and stepped in and helped out.

Well in addition to the award our winner every month gets a free Thickburger every week for a year from Hardees.

ROY MORTIMER – VOLUNTEER
It was mentioned we have a hundred some, almost two hundred sites we work on. And we go, we clean up around them, we get the ivy and the kudzu out.

BOB REYNOLDS – VOLUNTEER
And we’ve been working some on South Pine Street with some cherry trees putting there, we’ve been working on Highway 221, Newt’s been great to work with. He coordinates things well, you’re always sure about what you’re going to be working on.

JACK ROPER
Well, we have for you, for our volunteer of the month of June, our Caring for the Carolinas award. Hardees, oddly enough, and Bath Fitter are our sponsors, Hardees spelled a different way of course. Congratulations!
