TOWNVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – A man drowned at the Ponderosa boat ramp on Lake Hartwell in Townville, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
47-year-old Juarez Jose Luis, from Texas, went swimming with a friend on Sunday at about 4:15 p.m. when he went under, authorities say.
Luis was found somewhere between 50 and 75 yards from the shoreline, according to Independent Mail.
Anderson County deputies, technical rescue team and medics were at the scene.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore was also called to the scene.
Shore said that Luis had been camping and fishing with co-workers at the site, and that the drowning was an accident.
The Sheriff’s Office got a call earlier saying that a man went swimming and never returned.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, June 6.
