Our 7News Mobile News app is getting some of your most requested upgrades, providing you with more ways to customize the news and weather you receive each day.
Your feedback has been great. Over the past several months, we’ve been hard at work to bring all the things you’ve said are important to you to this update.
If you already have our app, you’re going to love the updates in this latest version.
If you’ve never downloaded our app before, this is your chance to get it.
Here are the highlights of the changes we’ve made.
You asked for personalized push alerts – you got it.
Under the current version of our app, if you opted into ‘push alerts’ you would receive every alert we sent out.
A lot of you, liked this, but some said you didn’t want to get an alert about some things.
In some cases, you’ve been very honest and told us you were turning off all ‘push alerts’ as a result.
If you’ve done that, this new functionality may make you to turn them back on.
With the latest version of the app, you have can choose what kind of alerts you want and even the location where the news is happening.
You can tailor the alerts you receive by clicking on the settings section and selecting the “notifications” tab.
You can opt in/out of any category at any time.
You will NOT get two alerts for the same story if you are signed up for multiple categories and locations.
The alert categories are:
- Breaking News
- Live Video
- On TV
- Editor’s Picks
- Closings and Delays
The locations are:
- Abbeville – Greenville Co.
- Anderson Co.
- Buncombe Co.
- Cherokee Co.
- Greenville Co.
- Henderson Co.
- Laurens – Union Co.
- NE Georgia
- Pickens – Oconee Co.
- Spartanburg Co.
So how does this work? Let’s say you are signed up for breaking news AND Greenville Co.
Let’s say we send out a push alerts about a boil water advisory in Simpsonville.
Only people who opted-in for breaking news AND Greenville Co. would get that alert.
Quiet time has been, by far, one of the most requested items you’ve asked us to add to our news app. We totally agree.
When enabled, no alerts from our app will be sent to you.
Your safety is important to us.
Please keep in mind, if you set quiet times — you will not receive any severe weather alerts we send out on our news app (if you’ve opted into those types of alerts).
Our news app is on 24/7. It never sleeps, but we know your sleep is important to you.
Receiving alerts late at night, overnight or early in the morning can interrupt your sleep.
For that reason, we already turn the sound off of any alerts we send out between 11 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Don’t want push alerts, but want to see breaking news when you are on the app?
Go to the new notification center.
It looks like a bell on the top right of the app.
You will see all the push alerts we sent out in the past 48 hours.
Click on the story to read it.
Swipe left or right to delete it from the list.
You said you wanted to be able to set the location for your weather. You got it.
Once you update to the latest version of our app, you will have two different ways of setting your weather location.
Under the settings section, you’ll click the weather tab.
You will then be able to choose to have the weather tailored to the GPS location of your phone or by Zip Code.
Weather by GPS is great if you like to travel and take our app with you or if you live in one city and travel to work in another.
The option to set the weather by a specific zip code is helpful for those that always want to know the weather their home or office.
No matter which one you choose, you can always hop back into the settings and change it if you decide you’d prefer one set of weather information more than another.
The choice is now yours.
Every day people ask us how to send us breaking news photos, videos and story tips.
Click the “Report It” button on the bottom gray bar of the app.
You can add photo/video with one click.
You can even call the station by hitting the ‘call station’ button.
