spartanburg shooting1SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Spartanburg Police say two pickup trucks were trying to get into the same lane before one of the drivers was shot on East Main Street at Oakwood Ave.

48-year-old Willie Leon Walker was arrested and charged with one count of attempted murder. The judge set his bond at $25,000 and Walker is not allowed to have any firearms until this case is finished in August. If convicted, Walker faces up to 30 years in prison.

The shooting happened around Noon Wednesday.

“It was just one shot like a pop,” said Kelli Wills, who worked nearby. “I could’ve just been in there doing my work and a bullet came through and I have a small child at home.”

Police say when the drivers passed the intersection of Drayton Road and Heywood Avenue, one driver signaled to merge but the other driver did not allow the merge causing that truck to run onto the shoulder of the road, police say.

When they were stopped at a traffic light on E. Main Street, police say the victim left his truck and approached the other truck when he was shot.

The victim was conscious and was taken to the hospital by EMS, police say. His condition has not been released.

The victim was shot in the stomach. The victim’s wife says he has a pre-existing heart condition and she is concerned he won’t be able to take the strain of recovery because the gunshot went into his intestines. She believes he faces a long recovery.

The victim’s wife and Walker’s mother sat together in court during the bond hearing, Thursday. They both said they don’t hold any grudges and it was an unfortunate incident.

“You have to be in control of your emotions,” said Spartanburg Police Department Major Art Littlejohn. “What happens is one person is not humble, one person is going to get the lane, one person’s not.”
