BALSAM GROVE, NC (WSPA)- No one was hurt after a restaurant caught fire in Transylvania County and spread to the attic of a US Post Office next door.
Balsam Grove firefighters were called to 8121 Parkway Road in Balsam Grove around 4 a.m. where they say Galloway’s Subs and other areas were on fire.
Fire officials say the restaurant was burned to the ground and the fire at the post office was confined to just the attic; the rest of the post office had water damage.
The US Post office says mail deliveries will continue as normal today.
The Post Office itself is closed indefinitely because of structural damage.
All retail operations and PO Box service at the Balsam Grove Post Office have been moved to the Rosman Post Office at 272 Main St, Rosman, NC, which is approximately 9 miles away, through Saturday, June 11.
Hours at Rosman Post Office on Friday are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
On Monday, June 13, a mobile retail van will be located in the Balsam Grove Post Office parking lot for customers to retrieve mail and make retail purchases during normal business hours: Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The mobile unit will remain until a suitable alternative is available.
Fire crews are still investigating. Officials say they don’t know how the fire started, but it began in the restaurant.
Rosman and Lake Toxaway fire departments as well as the Transylvania County Sheriff’s office is assisting.
