30 soldiers headed to Afghanistan get sendoff in Spartanburg


SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Spartanburg showed its support for 30 soldiers deploying to Afghanistan, Saturday evening.

The South Carolina Army National Guard hosted a deployment ceremony at USC Upstate.

The ceremony highlights and honors their sacrifice and service as they are deployed once more to Afghanistan.

The 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade is a group of highly experienced and trained soldiers.

The SC Army National Guard says the unit is being deployed as communcations support for units around the world.

They help secure telephone, radio, and computer communications for other service members.

The unit served similar operations in 2004, 2005, and 2011.

The soldiers will return from their deployment in about nine months.
