NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Days after a woman was attacked at a Lewis County Walmart, family members are crediting her co-workers for saving her life.
Tammy Miller told News 2 her niece, Samantha Clifft, is like a daughter to her. She said when the young woman told her she wanted out of her marriage, she was supportive, but wasn’t aware of how bad things were.
“If she would have told any of us, we would have got her away from him. To another state if we could have,” said Miller.
Her uncle Rob Costa added, “If I had known, I would have protected her – been there. I would have helped.”
Two days after Samantha, 22, tried to leave her husband, Airick Clifft, he showed up to the Walmart in Hohenwald at 12:45 a.m. during her work shift.
That’s when officers said he attacked Samantha with a knife.
“She’s got tons of injuries. Right now the main concern is he hit two arteries,” explained Miller. “One in her hand and one in her neck and the main concern is she has a collapsed lung.”
Doctors told the young woman’s family she will likely need facial reconstructive surgery.
Family members credit Samantha’s co-workers for saving her life.
“They pulled him off of her and held him down until the cops got there. The Walmart employees held pressure on the wounds. Plus, customers and employees held pressure on all her wounds and they all saved her life,” Miller said.
Family members told News 2 they didn’t realize it at the time but there were warning signs. They are now encouraging anyone else in a similar situation as their loved one to get help.
“We seen bruises on her, but she always had really good excuses,” Miller recalled.
Samantha does not have health insurance. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with medical expenses. Click here to donate.
