Officers search for armed robbery suspect in Newberry Co.

NEWBERRY CO. (WSPA) — The search is on in Newberry County for a suspect in an armed robbery.

Deputies and agents with the S.C. Law Enforcement Division were searching shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday for a male who they say robbed a convenience store early Saturday morning.

Deputies said in a news release that bloodhounds and helicopter will search a wooded area near the intersection of SC 34/I26 for the suspect.

The BP on SC 34 was robbed earlier Saturday morning.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing a camouflage hooded jacket, light colored blue jeans, and dingy tennis type shoes.

Deputies say the suspect confronted the clerk and robbed the clerk of cash money and cigarettes before fleeing on foot. Bloodhounds tracked the suspect, but failed to locate him.

Witnesses at a Waffle House restaurant later saw a similarly described male entering a wooded area near the restaurant, deputies say.

The public is asked to call 911 immediately if they see someone matching the suspect’s description.
