One man on life support after beating, deputies say

One man has been placed on life support after deputies say he was assaulted.

A Spartanburg County deputy responded to an incident at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday.

They arrived to find two men in the roadway on Monks Grove Church Road.

Witnesses told deputies that the men had been fighting prior to the deputy’s arrival.

One witness told an officer that he tried breaking up the fight in which he saw Ward slam the victim’s head into the ground multiple times, according to an incident report.

A deputy was unable to speak to the victim after he lost consciousness, the report state. The victim was taken to Spartanburg Medical Center where he was later placed on life support from the injuries suffered in the altercation.

Jeremy Dwayne Ward, 31, of Spartanburg has been charged with first-degree assault and battery in connection to the assault.

Ward claimed that he chased a dog off his property with a stick before he was attacked by the 55-year-old victim and another man, and that he was defending himself, the report states.
