A man faces several charges after deputies say he injured an officer who tried arresting him after he was caught breaking into a vehicle.
Christopher Barnes, 33, of Rutherfordton, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, attempted breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, breaking and entering a motor vehicle, attempted larceny, possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of resisting arrest.
A detective with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office saw Barnes attempt to break into one vehicle, before breaking into another vehicle at a home around 7 p.m. Tuesday, deputies say.
The detective identified himself as an officer and tried to arrest the suspect – later identified as Barnes – until backup could arrive.
But deputies say Barnes took off in his van as the detective tried to detain him.
The officer was dragged by the van and suffered scrapes and bruises. Meanwhile, Barnes fled the area.
Detectives with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office identified Barnes as the suspect during the course of their investigation and arrested him on Wednesday.
Barnes has been placed in the Rutherford County Detention Center under a $65,000 bond.
The detective was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released for his injuries.
