EASLEY, SC (WSPA) – The suspect in a May standoff near Easley died from an intentional overdose, according to the Pickens Co. coroner.

Coroner Kandy Kelley says in her report that non-lethal tear gas did not factor in the death of Calvin Joseph Benton, Jr.

Benton’s death was ruled a suicide after he overdosed on Oxycodone that was prescribed to him, according to the report.

Benton was in a standoff with deputies after they say he shot a woman on her porch.

The ended after three and a half hours when deputies used tear gas and found Benton dead inside.

Deputies say the house was barricaded inside with plywood covering multiple areas.
