LANDRUM, S.C. (WSPA) – It was a tense scene in a Landrum neighborhood some residents describe as peaceful.
“I’ve lived here two years,” said Matthew Satterfield. “It’s a quiet neighborhood. A real good neighborhood.” Satterfield says he was surprised to learn of a deadly officer involved shooting just down the street from his home. Other residents who did not want to go on camera say it wasn’t a shock to see law enforcement along bird mountain road. That’s where Spartanburg county sheriff chuck wright says deputies shot and killed 63 year old Alexis George Mishtowt — known as “Alex.”
“We were doing a little checking on some activities he had going on,” said Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright.
The sheriff says what started as an undercover operation escalated when Mishtowt pointed a gun a deputies. He says the 5 or six deputies on scene were dealing with a man who was heavily armed, and he thinks the shooting was justified. “The officers did – I think – a great job, matter of fact I know he did,” said Sheriff Wright.
The coroner says Mishtowt died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
“Just understand that these officers – that’s not their mission. Their mission is to protect and serve and sometimes that’s the only way to protect and serve,” said Sheriff Wright.
SLED is now leading this investigation, and the names of the deputies involved haven’t been released. Another person was also detained for questioning.
