Man charged after hitting motorcycle, killing 2 in Anderson Co.

ANDERSON COUNTY (WSPA) – A man has been charged with hitting and killing a couple on a motorcycle in Anderson County.

The S.C. Highway Patrol says the crash happened on Highway 28 near Highway 24 at 2:46 a.m. Sunday.

Officials say a 2004 Harley Davidson and a 2005 Nissan Altima were both traveling west on Highway 28, when the Nissan hit the back of the motorcycle.

The driver and passenger of the motorcycle were both thrown from the bike and died at the scene.

The coroner identified the couple who died as Bryan Smith and Shannon Smith of Anderson. The husband and wife were both 46 years old.

Troopers say neither was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The driver of the Nissan, 35-year-old Jesse Speer, has been charged with two counts of felony DUI resulting in death and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

He has a total of $500,000 for bond. All the charges carried a $125,000 bond.

Speer is being held in the Anderson County Detention Center.
