Murder suspect charged after standoff in Newberry Co, deputies say

NEWBERRY CO. (WSPA) – A man in a Laurens County murder investigation has been charged with one count of Murder after a standoff in Newberry County.

Ronald Davis, 40, faces this charge along with one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the Lauren County Detention Center. He did not receive a bond for either charge.

Members of SLED and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office Critical Response Team responded to the home, located on the 13000 block of C.R. Koon Highway.

Officials with the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office say Davis was threatening to commit suicide, or commit suicide by cop at a home in Newberry County.

Two homes were evacuated as a precaution during the standoff.

Officials say the Davis turned himself into Laurens County deputies at the detention center one hour after the standoff began.

Davis is accused of shooting his girlfriend multiple times.

Laurens County deputies say that Davis called 911 at 1:30 a.m. Sunday and claimed that his girlfriend had a gun and pointed it at him before he took the gun and shot her.

Deputies say the 28-year-old woman’s young child was in the home when the deadly shooting happened.

The 4-year-old child has been placed in the custody of the S.C. Department of Social Services.

The coroner has identified the shooting victim as Shana Renee Prophet. The coroner said she was shot at her home at 4149 Allen Bridge Road.
