RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A young man from Raleigh who is away at college is reflecting on being shot during a robbery last month.
“I’ve realized you have to do as much as you can with the time you have,” Plato Collins “Lins” Barwick IV said.
It’s a lesson Wake Forest University student Barwick learned after he was shot June 11, while walking to his college apartment in Winston Salem.
“When I got shot, the bullet fractured my spine and sent a bunch of bone fragments into my spinal cord which bruised and damaged the nerves that control my entire right leg,” Barwick said.
Barwick, a graduate of Needham B. Broughton High School, underwent two surgeries over the course of more than 2 weeks after being shot.
Lins’ fraternity brothers at Kappa Alpha rallied around the rising junior — selling t-shirts to help pay for his medical bills.
But more important to the pre-med student, they also helped him raise money for a little girl named Angel whom he met while interning at a hospital in Ghana.
He says Angel, who has cerebral palsy was found buried alive. Now, as he continues to heal, it lifts his spirits, to see other people helping to provide Angel with the care she needs.
“It was a nice way of supporting me and my recovery because it was something I could look at it and understand and look forward to implementing when I got better,” Barwick said.
And although there have been some difficult moments since the shooting.
“You can’t change what happens… I can’t change the fact that I got shot,” he said.
It helps to know he can change life for the better… for a little girl.
“It helps me to do something from such a tragic incident,” said Barwick. Click here for the GoFundMe page for Angel
