SALEMBURG, N.C. (WNCN) – One person died after multiple people were shot, stabbed or beaten during a fight at a country club in Sampson County Sunday morning, Sampson County authorities said.
“Boy, I have never experienced anything like last night,” said Jefferson Strickland, who lives across the street.
A call regarding gunshots and a fight at the Lakewood Country Club clubhouse near Salemburg came in to the 911 center just after 2:30 a.m. Additional calls came in and indicated that there were multiple gunshot victims and a stabbing victim.
The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, Sampson County EMS and Roseboro Rescue & EMS responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, deputies found several groups of people engaged in fights and deputies attempted to break up the fights.
“One of the deputies that was attempting to break up the fight was cut. We believe it may have been with a broken glass shard from a bottle,” Sampson Co. Capt. Eric Pope said. He is being treated at Sampson Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.
A preliminary investigation shows that the clubhouse was rented out to a person for a private party and sometime around 2:30
a.m. an altercation occurred. Three people were shot, one was stabbed and two were physically beaten. The motive is not yet known, a sheriff’s office official said.
“This will not be a simple investigation,” Capt. Pope told CBS North Carolina. “We’ve got several different versions. Until we can actually interview those who were wounded, the details are still kind of sketchy.”
One of the victims, identified as Anthony King of Roseboro, was initially
supposed to be airlifted to WakeMed with serious injuries, however, due to his condition the airlift was cancelled and emergency surgery was performed at Sampson Regional Medical Center. He was then transported to WakeMed where he died shortly after 12 p.m., authorities said.
Star Royal, also of Roseboro, has been identified as one of the physical assault victims. Royal was transported to Cape Fear Valley Hospital with severe head trauma.
Mary Denise Rich of Huntington, New York was treated at Sampson Regional Medical Center for a minor stab wound and a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
Daniel Cleveland Cooper of Salemburg was treated at Sampson Regional Medical Center for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
Another physical assault victim and a stabbing victim are currently being treated at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. Their identities are currently being withheld pending verification.
Strickland said, “this was so unaccustomed to this neighborhood. It’s unbelievable like something like that would happen at Lakewood.”
The manager of Lakewood Country Club, Curt Pritchard, told CBS North Carolina that the altercation actually began around 1 a.m. and that the group renting the country club was from Fayetteville.
No member or staff of the country club were in attendance at the private event, Pritchard said.
The country club was open Sunday and operated under normal business hours.
The investigation is ongoing.
