NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — A police officer is recovering after being struck by gunfire following a stand-off in North Charleston.
According to Deputy Chief David Cheatle with the North Charleston Police Department, at approximately 4:33 p.m. on Monday, July 4, North Charleston Police received a call from someone about a white vehicle trying to run over a pedestrian in the road on Waltham Road in Northwoods Estates.
We’re told officers arrived at the scene and secured a perimeter around 8174 Waltham attempting to contact the suspect whose vehicle was parked in the backyard. The suspect then appeared in a second story window of the house and fired multiple shots at officers, according to a news release.
Authorities say one officer was struck by gunfire on the right side of the stomach. “Thankfully the vest did it’s job and stopped the round,” Cheatle said.
Medics transported the officer to the Medical University of South Carolina.
The suspect then exited the front door and continued to fire at officers. The suspect was then shot by officers. Medics transported the suspect to Trident Medical Hospital.
SLED is currently on scene.
