Pokémon GO & Get Fit: Upstate officer uses game to make workout plan

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate officer (and fellow Pokémon GO player) came up with a brilliant idea when he realized people who were addicted to the new game were “accidentally exercising.”

He said after seeing several social media posts about people being sore from playing, he decided to create a workout routine that involved features of the game.

For example, his fitness plan includes exercising after catching certain Pokémon.

Here’s the “Catch ’em all!” workout he shared on his PokeFitness page:

Jog/ walk/ ruck/ bike until completion of:
Catching 20 Pokemon, regardless of what they are
(don’t worry, you can always send them back to the professor for more Pokecandy!)

Every time you catch a Pokemon that you already own, do 10 air squats and 10 lunges (10 lunges each leg)
Every time you catch a Pokemon that you don’t own, do 20 air squats and 20 lunges (20 lunges each leg)

End of exercise: Whatever the CP of the 20th Pokemon you catch, plank for that long in seconds. Example: the CP of the 20th Pokemon I catch is 120, I’ll plank for 2 minutes straight!

He says that if the CP is too high, just try to get there.

He also suggests stretching before working out and using proper squat form.

Here is the “Barney style” of the workout:
1. Move until you see a Pokemon, then catch it!
2. If you already own it, do 10 air squats and 10 lunges (each leg). If you don’t own it, double those numbers!
3. Move until you catch another Pokemon
4. Repeat until you catch 20 pokemon
5. Whatever the CP is of the 20th pokemon, plank for that many seconds!
6. FEEL THE BURN

Variations:
Lower the numbers if you need to.

He also shared his “Death by Rattata” workout:

Jog/ walk/ ruck/ bike until completion of:
Spot and/or catch 5 rattatas.
Every time you spot OR catch a rattata, do 10 burpees. (50 total)
End of exercise: maximum push ups you can do until failure then plank until failure.

Barny style:
1. Move until you see a Ratatta
2. Do 10 burpees
3. Move until you see another Ratatta
4. Do 10 more
5. Repeat until you do 50 burpees total
6. Do push-ups until you can’t do anymore
7. Plank until you die

Variations:
No rattatas in your area? Just choose another extremely common Pokemon around you.
Do push-ups on your knees if you need to.
If you can’t do burpees, just do pushups.

And the best part of the fitness plan: all you need is a cell phone with the Pokémon GO app. And, of course, a bike and ruck sack if you want to take a step further.
