(WSPA) – The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens about scam calls and checking in to locations on social media.
Deputies say scammers are spoofing their caller ID to make it appear as though they are calling for a bank, a business, or even a government institution.
The callers may appear to be calling from nearby but may in fact be calling from another state or another country.
The Sheriff’s Office says it is extremely difficult or impossible to find the actual location or identity of the callers.
They also warn against giving any personal information over the phone or social media. They say law enforcement will never ask to provide financial information over the phone.
Citizens are also urged not to check in to places publicly as that gives criminals information on where you are or if your residence is unattended.
If you have a question about whether a call from law enforcement is legitimate, you should always contact that agency directly and ask to speak with the officer that supposedly left the message.
