INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis police say an officer shot a suicidal man who charged toward police and refused to stop on the far south side of the city Monday afternoon.
IMPD Sgt. Kendale Adams said it happened in the 5500 block of Manker Street, near US 31 and Edgewood Avenue, around 3:45 p.m.
The mother of a 30-year-old man told police her son was suicidal. When an officer arrived, the man had a towel in his hand and refused to stop “jogging” toward the officer, Adams said.
Fearing what may be covered by the towel, the officer shot the man, according to Adams. He was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskanazi Hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive.
Adams said the man was threatening to commit suicide by cop.
It’s unclear if the man was carrying anything under the towel.
The officer and the man shot have not been identified.
