GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – SLED is investigating after a man died Saturday after deputies were called to the Wyndham Hotel because of the man’s erratic and delusional behavior.
The Sheriff’s Department says 39-year-old Sheldon Robinson from Orlando, Florida died when deputies attempted to get him medical attention.
Deputies were called to the hotel on Fisherman Lane multiple times throughout the day and they say Robinson claimed he was suffering from anxiety and felt people were trying to shoot at him and were crawling underneath his door. Callers told dispatchers that Robinson was banging his head on the wall.
Deputies convinced Robinson to go downstairs to speak with medics in the lobby and was accompanied by three deputies and a friend in the elevator. Once in the elevator deputies say he became combative and started kicking and spitting on a deputy while screaming that he thought someone was after him. Moments after this, deputies say Robinson became unresponsive and did not have a pulse.
Deputies and EMS performed CPR on Robinson for 25 minutes before he was pronounced dead. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office says Robinson was never detained or placed under arrest at any point. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
The Sheriff’s Office says SLED has been requested to investigate the incident.
