GREENVILLE (SC) The Greenville Zoo will say goodbye to two of it’s Bornean orangutans by the end of August.

The zoo announced on Wednesday that Mia and Chelsea are scheduled to be transferred to other zoos as part of the Orangutan Species Survival Program. The orangutans have been at the zoo in the Upstate for 13 years.

Mia’s new home will be the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah while Chelsea will be sent to the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Greenville Zoo is scheduled to receive a pair of Sumatran orangutans this fall.

“Bittersweet situations like this come with the territory in our line of work,” said Greenville Zoo administrator Jeff Bullock in a written release. “There’s no question that we’ll be sad to see Mia and Chelsea go, but we’re also looking forward to working with and introducing the Sumatran orangutans to zoo guests in the coming months.”

A farewell celebration for Mia and Chelsea will be announced in the coming weeks.
