Clemson, S.C—Monday is the last day of double practices for the Clemson football team. With the start of the academic year early at Clemson (school starts Wednesday), preseason practice is spread over more days, but with fewer days of double practices than many schools.
“Today is our last day of two-a-days,” said Head Coach Dabo Swinney. “We had a light workout this morning and we were missing all the new freshmen because of a mandatory academic activity. This morning we worked on special teams, then worked on individual drills trying to correct some things from Saturday’s scrimmage.
“We will come back tonight for a full pads practice and the freshmen will be back by then.”
Swinney said the preseason practices have been productive as the team wraps up pre-school camp. “Tomorrow we will wrap up the first phase of preseason camp. The first two weeks are a good time of the year because we get the guys for two weeks and it is all football. We aren’t subject to the 20-hour rule and taking a day off. But school starts Wednesday so we will be back to those rules.”
Swinney commented on a couple of players when asked by the media after the morning workout. “Shadell Bell has shown no fear (in his move from wide receiver to tight end). He is going to be a good football player for us. Tight end is a much more physical position, but he has made the transition. We saw that the first time he went into the PAW drill. Glad we have him for the next four years.
“I was generally not pleased with the defense at the scrimmage Saturday, but I did think Jadar Johnson and Tre Lamar played well. Lamar has had a good fall camp. He is nipping at the heals of the first team linebackers. He looks like a veteran out there.”
In personnel news, tight end D.J. Greenlee missed practice as he recovers from a slight concussion he suffered during the scrimmage last Saturday. Hunter Renfrow, who missed the scrimmage with a hamstring injury, was back at practice Monday morning. Coach Swinney said after practice that he hopes cornerback Marcus Edmond would be back at practice by next Monday.
