Greenville County Schools Spokesperson Beth Brotherton sent out a statement about the first day back to school:
We had a great first day. No major issues to report. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I can tell you we had more late buses this afternoon than this morning. The primary reasons are:
• We take a few extra minutes loading children at the school level to ensure they are getting on the right bus! (10-15 minute delay there)
• We have many drivers new to their route and drivers who are doubling routes because of the driver shortage.
• Tagged students. All kindergarten and first grade students must be picked up by a parent or guardian at their bus stop with a matching tag. If the parent is not there to claim the child, then the driver must return the child to school. This creates a ripple effect. Instead of being able to move directly to the middle school route, the driver must reverse course and return to the elementary school first. This can cause significant delays.
• A few breakdowns
• General traffic and construction delays.
