Spartanburg HS student killed in moped crash

SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) -A Spartanburg High School student died Friday night after his moped crashed with a truck in Spartanburg.

The coroner says Rico Chanzed Matthews, 17, was killed.

A member of the JROTC on campus, and was remembered fondly by many of the students. He was a member of Junior Leadership Spartanburg. Faculty and Staff held a service at the flag pole this morning to remember him, according to the school district.

The wreck happened at the corner of Wood Street and Pearl Street around 11 p.m.

The accident report says Matthews was turning left onto East Pearl St. and hit the truck.
